GUS MACKER AT CMU

ABOUT US

Here at Central Michigan University, we proudly say "Fire Up Chips!" as a way of expressing excitement and fellowship to those in our community, and one would be hard pressed to find a group on campus more embracing of this sentiment than the Gus Macker family.

It's been eleven years since the first Macker took place in front of Kelly Shorts stadium, and the ways that the tournament has grown since then have been immense. Starting the second year, an academic course was put in place that allowed CMU Students who enrolled the opportunity to coordinate the event. From this, the CMU Macker family was born.

RPL 333 - Production of Festival and Events - is a course that students in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration area of study can choose to apply for and, if selected, enroll in. The focus is on learning the ins and outs planning large scale community events, including securing sponsors, developing animation plans, contacting vendors, communicating with venues, and much more. Students enrolled in the course gain hands on experience in these areas by planning and executing the annual Gus Macker Basketball Festival that occurs in the middle of campus each April. While the lessons learned in the classroom are immeasurable, perhaps the greatest development in the past eleven years have been the friendships one gains from being a part of the class, which are everlasting.

This year we are celebrating ten years of having the great opportunity to plan this Gus Macker Basketball Festival as a class! So stay tuned and subscribe to our blog to see our team put on, "Cheers to 10 Years! The Fuss About Gus - Green Eggs and Slams!"
